I miss my boat. [11 Feb 2008|03:22pm]
and I'm feeling odd, so this is what my desktop looks like:

it's the starboard door hanging in the wetlab because we're trying to repaint it (aluminum + saltwater + iron = bad) and the paint needs to dry for a ridiculous length of time and...it rains every day in tahiti. at least while we were there.

it's a freaking heavy door.

and really stinky paint.

(twist one on )

[16 Jan 2008|03:51pm]
1) ...apparantly, I'm not (ok, my mother and I aren't) the only knitters in the world who still grok the dead languages. the number of posts in/with latin on the Harlot's recent death-by-leaf entry show this.

one day, we will take over the world. you can join us. we shall be your morpheus- absolvi tuam animam...muahaha...

2) someday, hundreds of years in the future when our current english is to english what middle english/old english is to our english now (feeling like a bad GRE yet?), i.e. understandable only to english professors and people who happened to take the right language (although we've deviated enough from germanic roots that spanish speakers will likely have the best chance of that, which I'm sure would/will drive all the English First people nuts and I looove that!)

ahem. anyway. so. in the future, monty python's Spamalot will surely be performed not as satire but as grandly as we currently perform Tosca or any other can't-understand-it-enjoy (or not) the-music opera.

and, of course, will have all the english professors giggling uncontrollably.

3) if someone corrects your grammar, anonymously, as in a simple

Example A:
{it's = it is, its=possessive},

you can feel free to ignore them if you feel slighted or insulted. but really, you shouldn't. just go "oh." and try to remember next time. or don't. it's your perogative. they're not slamming you. they're not lording their immense grammatical knowledge over you. they're not saying you're stupid. they're just like me. they notice. they can't help themselves, either because of genetics (hi mom) or good teachers (hi Mrs O'Neal, Mrs Nicholson, Mr Dvorak, Mrs Topp, Miss Josephs, Big Dunn) ...they see the error, they MUST fix.

now, on the other hand, if they direct the comment at you and say something like this...

Example B:
{marmotknit, god, you know, you embody everything that is wrong in this world because you just can't care enough to know a stupid third grade contraction, you should be ashamed. its= possessive, it's = it is! get an education!}

then by all means, react in anger. unless they're a personal friend poking fun at you, in which case you still need to react, otherwise other denizens of the blogosphere will rush to your defense and a flame war will have begun.

but if the comment was like example A not example B, then...lighten up. don't immediately rush to post something directed at the corrector saying that unless they're being paid to professionally edit, they shouldn't, because it's bad form. it's really not. I promise. Bad form is B. A is just...a post. if you feel you MUST post a defense...then simply post it. don't direct it to that person.

and you can't say that you shouldn't correct in a blog in a different form of english (either an ESL blog, or whatever), because who wants to be putting something incorrect in print? reason number one why I don't post often in norwegian. that's what drove me crazy when I handed my articles to people at my folkehøgskole to correct because they'd giggle as they read it and then hand it back- uncorrected!- because they thought it was cute and didn't want to offend me.

cute? bad grammar cute? for a published thing? NO!

(and really....if you are in your professional life a published writer....then...you're used to it. you shrug and move on. and seriously, given the post...I'd be too distracted to proofread. I might go back and fix it after things had, you know, calmed down/I was sober again/had fixed the sock, but...then again, I might not. cause I'm lazy.)
4)....and if you spell grammatical incorrectly in your 'don't correct others' post...you just make me UNBEARABLY want to correct it. you have no idea.

my fingers itch, and it ain't just the hives, baby.

AleXander got me started on the icanhascheezeburger website. here's one of my favourites:
and then there's...
because...penguins. really. cannot resist the penguins.

and lastly...the 'me' on world of warcraft.
I have a kitty. and a bear.

aaaand... [15 Dec 2007|10:34pm]
when all is bleak and ucky and the demons are winning the war in your head...

some very random things can make it better.

Exhibit A:) thai cilantro spicy wings + pad thai + vietnamese coffee + The Boy

Exhibit B:) This quote from zenkitty:

It was there because that was how Beowulf would have really felt. He wouldn’t have been polite or politically correct about it, and he wouldn’t have cared if he offended someone. (If someone offended HIM, he’d take a battleaxe to them. If you’re so offended, where’s your battleaxe? Oh, you haven’t got a battleaxe? Well, then Beowulf WINS.) (The Beowulf in my head is not a man of subtle arguments.)

From a comment on this blog from the man behind Schlock Mercenary. it's close to the bottom of the page. skip down to it, it's totally worth it. It totally reminded me of the angl0sax0red thing, and made me smile.

Exhibit C:) My fortune cookie, which told me "it's one of those low-key days that you'd rather spend just chilling" and taught me how to say very comfortable in chinese. (hun xue fu)

and lastly,

Exhibit D:) Vermonty Python. All hail Ben and Jerry's.

(twist one on )

oh dear, the wonders of the internet... [19 Sep 2007|05:28pm]
try to figure out who wrote a song and what do you find?

fluffy kittens, euphoniums, crinolines, and god.

heehee.

(twist one on )

[07 May 2007|02:36pm]
so the boy still hasn't heard from SF yet.  hopefully he will soon and they will hire him so's we can be in the same time zone- on the same coast, even- and then this fall when I come back from working at the skog I can move down there.  nyeeees.  muahahahaa.

but yeah- luther is still being stupid and not sending me transcripts, so tomorrow it's time to unleash the smackdown.

I discovered a site that sells jayne hat cell phone covers.  must.  have.  AND I still have scrap yarn from the three hats o' jayne that I knit so whee!  now I know what to do with it.

(I can see 1 maglite shining backstage twist one on )

no happy gelatinous plankton fun for marit. [17 Mar 2007|02:41pm]
so evidently march 16th equals "mid march," for yesterday I recieved my letter from the monterey bay aquarium research institute.  the fact that there were 170 applicants for 18 positions (possibly fewer, because the letter said that 6 of the positions had been closed without applicant, whatever that means) is somewhat of a balm to my soul, but still I'm disappointed.  oh well.  next year.  besides, that means I can skog it up this summer without feeling guilty.  or maybe I'll disappear to the monterey institute for international studies to indulge my inner language slut.  or maybe I'll just kidnap the boy and elope.

(twist one on )

I miss my ovid. [16 Mar 2007|01:36am]

but he's happily eating oranges with his fellow fishy friends, so there's that.

and now:  *fanfare* (brass, of course)

randomness from my brain!   *the huddling masses cringe in fear*   (will someone shut off the narration, please?  thank you.)

fun quotes!

"you will never enjoy the world aright till the sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens and crowned with the stars."
thomas fraherne

"ectoparasite-modulated deposition of maternal androgens in great tit eggs."
ok, so that's not really a quote. still.

"may your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view."
edward abbey
(that's what I wrote at the top of the mainmast, in case you were wondering, which you weren't, but that's ok.)

"those who visit foreign nations, but associate only with their own countrymen, change their climate, but not their customs. they see new meridians but the same men; and with heads as empty as their pockets, return home with traveled bodies; but untraveled minds."
c.c. colton

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same god who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
galileo

so anyway.  knitting knitting knitting, and off to the hot shop tomorrow for some glassblowing watching. whoo!

[20 Sep 2006|06:46pm]

beginning the process of unpacking and getting my stuff organized so I can prepare for school in october.  working on my travel arrangements now.  creepyscary.

I'm in this whole little zone where little things have been making me twitchy- not escape from the small children twitchy, but the weird little heart-scrunch that you can't tell is a good thing or a bad thing.  y'know?  things like putting my key in the door of my parents' house in tacoma and feeling like it was mine and I'd leapt years in the future, checking the mail today as I wandered down the street to the starbuck's with my laptop (back from shop!  gleee!) and feeling like everything was an overlay, an image projected onto a scrim to mask reality, lying awake last night before waking up to period-and-cramps-with-a-vengeance and it's just a weird day.  weird.  I don't want to be 23 yet.  I think I want to be just buried in research- nice, safe, cuddly research- right now.  I woke up crying a little because I was dreaming about our Jterm human dissection and anatomy class and that we got to meet our donors roger and nora and they got to tell us what was going on in their lives and how they'd come to the decision to give us such a gift.  trying not to cry now.

damn reproductive biology and endocrinology.

aaand a troupe of four uniformed tweeners just walked into starbucks and holy crap did my brain do the special effect blurry time/space slide into japan.  and then I blinked, and it was gone.

four o'clock is clearly the starbucks rush time in tacoma.

Maybe I'll go for a bikeride tomorrow and everything will seem less...weird.

(twist one on )

[14 Sep 2006|10:35am]

greetings from billings.
rapido update of doom follows.

my life is in my car.
my car is driving to tacoma.
my brain and sanity are lost somewhere along the road.
are we having fun yet?

spent summer at norwegian camp.
laptop screen dies.
came home for required med stuff for school in fall.
spent a week lifeguarding at the korean camp.
spent a week at little pine.  (aaaaah).
made a great fuzzy slinky blanket at little pine.
spent a week with matt running around minneapolis. (yaaay)
pirates of the caribbean still rocks.
I didn't want to demand my 6 bucks back from Snakes on a Plane (every time I think of that title I get this image of CMOT Dibbler standing in a street saying "Snakes!  Snakes onna Plane!  Inna bun!" and I laugh, and avoid explaining to everyone around me why I'm chortling.)
      yay for the zoo.
yay for sharks 3d at the imax.
yay for legoland at the mall.  (drool drool salivate drool)
yay for the mpls sculpture garden.
slightly less yay for the walker, in its prissy ucky refusal to show minnesotan artwork.
      yay for yarn.  mmmm.  yarn.
drove to moorhead.
drove to bismark.  had a-maz-ing food at the east 40 chophouse.
drove to billings.
contemplating drive to butte?  missoula?  somewhere.

claire is a bum because she's being all law-schooly in tulane and isn't in missoula so I can visit her.  maybe I'll scare the crap out of jessie instead.  nah, she's probably at school already.

[03 Jul 2006|12:26am]
[ mood | miss the boy-style ]

yeaaaah....been awhile...but yes.  have survived the first week of what I thought was exhausting hell...those kids went home and I got all excited for the next round and ohmygod was it ever forty times as bad.  did I say forty?  I meant 400.  maybe 4000.  suffice it to say that we had 14 girls between the ages of 8 and 11 all with the attention span of a drunken moth with ADHD for 2 weeks.  but it wiiilllll be better, because I have purchased a hammock.

That's right.  Ei hengekøya.   ei?  eller er det en?  vet'ka.

curse my latte.  tastes so good but makes not sleepy and reaaaally should sleep.

but yaaaay elsebet's here so I'm not the only lifeguard and I finally might get to do stuff that I really want to do as opposed to stuff that I like to do but not constantly.

and yaaaaaay I have a new fish.  his name is (for now, anyway) cicero.  I think it's going to stick.  It's sort of a ridiculous name for such a small fish (I think he'll ultimately prove himself to be an oranda because his forehead is all bubbly although the label on the tank said fantail comet, so I'm not sure) but that's what makes it perfect, because cicero is sort of ridiculous.  y'know?  so now I've got ovid and cicero, although for now cicero might be ibsen since that's the theme of camp this year.

I think I should drag myself off to bed.  my sentence structure is starting to get odd and the languages are warring in my head and I'm not quite done with cleaning out my cubby and restoring some semblance of order before chaos descends again.

(twist one on )

aah, america. [12 May 2006|11:27am]
hey guess what?

taking antidepressants might increase your risk of suicide.

we're poised to re-ban abortion...and Colombia is starting to legalize them.  Colombia.

and as much as I love genetics, and as much as it is fascinating...don't ignore basic underlying tenets of medicine both common and uncommon.

and sidenote:

why must Firefly be so amazing and Angel/Buffy so...not?  and why must my roommate be obsessed with it and not Firefly?

(twist one on )

[07 May 2006|01:02am]
haha.

mmm. La Rana has Guinness on tap AND it has Hansa. woo. not as good as ...pribb? pab? ..some weird swedish beer, but that could have just been the illicit yay chinese food in sweden...thing.

I have 4 more days of college.

4.

and then just 5 exams and three days before I graduate and (ba da daaaaa) the real world beckons.

good god.

as a side note, I've started a knitting blog. it's at http://marmotknit.blogspot.com/ because it's much easier to post pictures. whee!
